Should teachers have the right to punish a child for praying in class, when it is done in silence?

What about praying over the food that they eat during lunch. When will the government finally stop teachers and administrators from interfereing in the prayer life of a child in school?|||Everyone should be able to decide what they believe in and practice it even if no one else likes it.|||no they shouldnt the student have freedom, as long as they arent hurting anyone else. The teachers are the ones who arent aloud to give thier opinion.|||no they shouldn't prayer in school is not targeted to individuals but the school as a whole|||if you're praying silently, how would anyone know?

simply close your eyes, say your little ditty and get on with it...

%26lt;sheesh!%26gt;

okay, read some of the other's responses, and i still want to know: IF YOU'RE PRAYING SILENTLY, HOW DOES ANYONE KNOW THAT YOU'RE PRAYING IN ORDER TO PUNISH YOU???|||NO WAY!!!!!!!!! since when has it been illegal to pray in school, it is just illegal to MAKE kids pray in school and for the school officials/teacher to lead prayer|||No, and the ACLU can go straight to hell.|||NO what harm is the child doing none|||That's insane! why are the teachers doing this?? This is bad :( Everyone should have freedom to pray as they wish.|||of course they don't have any right!That't their religion and nobody can stop them!|||i child should NEVER be punished for praying. If they are, I believe that would be ground sfor a lawsuit...freedom of religion. Individual spirituality is a RIGHT in the public school system. Organized religion has no place in school though. Not even "intelligent design" should be taught.|||never|||It's wrong to stop someone from doing their religious activity.|||I don't think it is legal for them to stop a child from praying in school...they are usually concerned when the prayer is teacher (or school personnel)led. As far as I know children can pray all they want at school.|||No a teacher should have no right to tell a child what to belive and what to not belive... it is a freedom of speech in they like it or not even if it is a child they have that right! htat is the freedom of Religion and a schoolcant hold a child back for that and scold them for opening praying for what they belive! this is an outrage to what Americas governtment stands for! this goes against the Constitution and the articals... Also the pledge of aligence.. i am sorry to bring this up aswell but when it refers to god in the statement it is not saying which god! it is like and insert name here! dont tell a child what to think becasues they are supost to be supported by there teachers to think openmindedly...|||no teachers do not have a righ to punish students for praying in silence. Even though church and state are separated, this does not iclude getting into the childs personal business. it would be unconstitutional for teachers to punish students. people have freedom of religion and if this is taken from us and we don't do anything about it then sooner or later they will take control of everything... it is up to us to make a difference.

later|||My son is 10. He still says "grace" (asks blessing) over his meal. Yes, even at school. Luckily, we live in a very rural area with a smaller sized school where (*crosses fingers*) we don't have this problem yet.

Children (and adults too for that matter) HAVE EVERY RIGHT to pray (especially silently) ANYWHERE they are (even in school). This is America, where we are SUPPOSED to have freedom of religion, of speech, etc. The day they TRY to punish my child for prayer is the day he starts his home schooling.

Great question!

God Bless.|||no, i do not think so.it is bet er to have kind heavier with them .|||No!praying over food should not be punishable,infact praying anywhere should not be punishable...well only if the child has been praying for the last 30mins of the class and with funny noises,like humming,snoring sounds,.. etc lol|||If they are praying and not paying attention, then they should be told to focus on the subject at hand. They can pray on their own time before or after class or during lunch and even before school or after.

If the student is taking a test and makes a silent prayer, how would the teacher know? Did you pull out a bible and light some candles, start speaking in toungues and shouting halleluya?|||How do they know it if it is done in silence?

More details, please even for a religious person like me, it doesn't make sense the question? It is an hypothetical question?|||No. Anyway, the teacher should be glad the child is being silent for any reason.|||I am unsure what incident or incidents you are referring to here. However, on the lighter side, there is a saying that as long as teachers give tests to students, there will always be prayer in school.|||Teachers do not have right over God. If the child prays it is out of his will, no power in the world could cease him.|||yes dy have a right to punish.|||yes.discipline is very important especially in student life.anything done in class without teacher permision is wrong..!!!!|||a class room is for studies not for prayers but even if a child is doing it silently once in a while is fine BUT child is suppose to focus on his lessons, he should be advised to do prayers at home or in the temple/church.|||silent prayer is completly personal connection between god n student ....it shud b allowed|||well surely teachers do not have the right to punish children for praying..our spiritual idealogy has all rights to be expressed...however if it has interupted the teacher while he or she was teaching then it should be looked upon|||student should have full freedom. but for their freedom their should be some limits. Parents should teach their child discipline from childhood only. I think this students who misbehaves in the class should be punish but for them there should be minor punishment not like that punishment which will harm the student's life.|||No, its independent issue of each individual, and no one has the right to involve in individual's doing.|||no the teachers have no right to punish the children
