This already amounts to the most expensive legal team in Portuguese history, though not in the UK or the world just yet.
But WHY ?, they have only been named 'suspects' in Portugal and have not been charged. Indeed being a 'suspect' in Portugal gives them the 'right to silence' but they have done everything but be silent, criticising the Portuguese Police on an almost daily basis while at the same time saying they are willing to return to Portugal to help the authorities.

They know the Portugese police believe they did it, they also know the PP has not got enough on them so by calling their bluff they hope that the PP will drop the case. How would that help them to be locked up if they know they didn't do anything wrong??
When you love someone who needs an operation that might save their life, wouldn't you want the best surgeon to operate on them if you could afford it??

I have no idea who is responsible for Maddy's disappearance, but also, those people, whatever they do, someone is going to say it's because they are guilty.

As Richard Branson et al have pledged money to pay for it I do not see any sinister motive in their doing so. As for the so called PR man, he replaces the former spokesperson who has returned to her own work. His main role is to deal with the media who are ready to pounce on any word or phrase, remove it from its context and twist it and spin it to the most outrageous extent and then present it as fact for their readerships, many of whom have IQs so low that it would embarrass an ameoba to claim ownership of one at that level. The McCanns need the help of a skilled spokesperson trained to give careful answers to questions posed by skilled journalists whose motto is " Never let the truth get in the way of a good story." Whenever the McCanns appear in public they are mobbed by journalists bombarding them with questions, and they are doing the right thing in keeping their mouths shut. This in no way suggests that they have something to hide. More likely it suggests that they do not trust the press to accurately report their statements.
The British news media are constantly banging on about spin doctors misleading the public. The British press are the biggest spin doctors of all. Their profession is "spin". In their eyes nothing on earth is as it seems. Truth cannot simply be truth. It can only be true if it is their version of it. Journalists spend their entire working lives spinning and the only thing that surprises me about that is that they all haven't screwed themselves into the floor years ago.
To those people who keep pointing their fingers at the McCanns and saying "I know that you are guilty".
